Sometimes, seeing the division and challenges of the world, it is easy to feel powerless. Faced with the cultural shifts that threaten our children, the challenges of political polarization, and the fact that 85% of Confirmed Catholics in Pennsylvania leave the Church by the age of 18… What can I possibly do? I’m not wealthy, a trendsetter, or a politician…

Our ministry has financial needs that I cannot personally afford to cover. In fact, what I can afford to give feels like it is only a drop in the bucket. I’ve had the thought, “Why bother?”

We are called to give because charity is something that transforms us. The Father calls us to a life of self-gift, not because of scarcity - as if God couldn’t afford to do whatever he wants to do without our help. Rather, charity, self-gift, makes us more like Him. It is an invitation to be transformed and to participate in His own divine life. This transformed humanity is precisely what the world needs to encounter. Dostoyevsky said that “Beauty will save the world” – Well there is nothing more beautiful than a transformed man or woman – the modern saint. It is through charity, and transformation in Christ, that the world is changed.

Spending time out at the camp, I see the impact that it is having on these kids. There is hope because Christ is with us and is still seeking out the little children! The camp has grown in the past year (Registration was up by 23%!). If you could hear their youthful voices in prayer as I have, you might tear up as I have. Kids are encountering God and are falling in love…
