WHY OLMC?

WHY WE BOUGHT A CAMP

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND STIRRING ADVENTURE THAT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU IS A PERSONAL MEETING WITH JESUS, WHO IS THE ONLY ONE WHO GIVES REAL MEANING TO OUR LIVES.
- ST. JOHN PAUL II

Joyful hope for the future of Catholicism in Pittsburgh
We have all heard the bleak statistics about the number of Catholics leaving the Church.
Catholics in Pittsburgh who are still active are particularly concerned about our children:
we want to know how to help our children experience and nurture
a vibrant, lifelong faith.

85% of Catholics who are confirmed in Pennsylvania
leave the faith by the time they are 21 years old.

- 2014 Pew Research Study
There are many factors that have contributed to this crisis of faith in our young people, but the bottom line is this: The models that worked in previous generations to assist parents in passing on the Faith to their children are no longer working. So the question remains:

What can we do to help
keep our kids Catholic?

After some research, we found what IS working in other dioceses throughout the country:

ADVENTURE CAMPS

Adventure Camps and Retreat Centers
across the country are flooded with middle school and high school students who are seeking Christ and cultivating a desire to participate in His Church.

A proven model for evangelizing youth
In brief, our goal is to provide young people in and around Pittsburgh with the effective, fun, and joyful opportunity to encounter Jesus Christ through an Adventure Camp and Retreat Center. We believe this project will be a major catalyst for positive impact in the Church of Pittsburgh for years to come.
Why adventure camp?

Outdoor programming accomplishes organically what so many of us fight to achieve with our families each day: interrupting the onslaught of busyness, technology, and messaging and creating more space for relationship, beauty, and quiet.

We think we've identified the perfect place for for a camp where kids can experience the power and beauty of nature, and in so doing be totally immersed in the power and beauty of Catholicism.

Why "Our Lady of Mount Carmel?"

“Carmel” comes from the Hebrew word “Karem-El” meaning “Garden of God”. It was in a garden that man forfeited his relationship with God, but it was also in a garden that man’s relationship to God was restored through the death and Resurrection of Jesus. Mt. Carmel is also where the prophet Elijah brought Israel back to the true worship of God and where he later heard the voice of God in the still whispering wind.
